APPARENTLY, YOU’RE ALLOWED TO BE HAPPY NOW

It took me forever, but I think I’m ready to start living my best life and being happy Now!

I’ll happily throw my hands up and admit that I’m the kind of person who sits on happiness, waiting for the ‘right time’ to arrive. Growing up, my mom always spoke about delayed gratification, encouraging us to think long-term. More of a suffer now, enjoy tomorrow kind of vibe. That advice shaped my life in many ways, but being the stubborn child that I am, I think I took it a tad too seriously.

My delayed gratification mindset has spilled into every aspect of my life. I am now the girl who buys things and just looks at them every day, quietly waiting for the ‘right time’ to use them until they almost become useless. I wanted to get skincare, but kept waiting for the perfect city, the perfect weather, the perfect aesthetics, and the perfect life phase that would somehow justify the effort of using skincare. Please, what does one even have to do with the other? lol.

Now, don’t get me wrong, holding on and effectively planning before leaping is great! I co-sign a million per cent. But depriving yourself of something you genuinely want or have worked hard for just because you’re waiting for the ‘perfect time’ or a mysterious sign? That is ridiculous. And yes, I said what I said. That is not self-discipline; it is self-punishment.

It’s never about doing something glamorous or spending beyond your means. It’s about loving yourself enough to know that you deserve the small joys right now and right here. You don’t have to procrastinate on your joy or postpone celebrations.

You can wear that nice dress or suit on a solo date instead of waiting for ‘Mr or Mrs Right’ to magically appear. You can celebrate that little win even if you’re still ten steps away from the big goal. You can take that walk by the beach alone. Go solo to that new restaurant your eyes keep drifting towards. Check out that new spot. Try that new hobby. Take the leap and do the thing that makes your heart quietly soar.

Every guru tells you your 20s are for having fun, and for the longest time, I thought fun had to be extravagant and expensive. However, as I embrace my 25 years on this earth, I’m realising that fun, for me, looks different. It’s quiet, it’s intentional, it’s soft.

Living my best life means spending more time with myself. It is investing in my knowledge and anything that uplifts my soul. It is tearing open that skincare product the moment it arrives and applying my not-so-cheap TIAM niacinamide serum generously cause these dark spots must flee! If even my skin requires generosity to finally cooperate with me, then who am I to deny my heart and soul of the little, fulfilling things that give them joy?

For a species of people who have no idea what expiry date is attached to our lives, we spend an alarming amount of time worrying about an uncertain future while depreciating our present. Again, the goal is never to live without purpose or vision. The goal is to live intentionally. To return to those habits that once gave us the giggles before life became oh so serious. To go through life remembering that this is an experience we will never get to re-live.

Because once we check out, what is left is eternal praise and shouting Hosanna! which sounds amazing, truly—but come on… don’t you want to experience all the beauty life has to offer here too? The simple things. The free but heartwarming things, the laughter, the quiet mornings, the solo walks, the unreasonably good skincare days (in case you haven’t caught on, the price of skincare makes it deserve multiple mentions). The moments where joy finds you without permission.
