Today I tried to catch a break
I fought the demons that tried to hold me down
I overcame the weights that kept my feet in place
I held my head above the water and took a deep breath
And just when the light hit my face,
I got shoved back into the abyss
Today I tried to catch a break
I looked at my reflection and didn’t flinch
I embraced my scars and called them beautiful
I flexed my shoulders and sighed in relief
And just when the fire shot through my veins,
I got shoved back into the abyss
Today I tried to catch a break
I recited silent prayers when my soul felt weary
I sank to my knees and cried for help till it came
I shook my body and embraced the freedom
And just when the truth straightened my bones
I got shoved back into the abyss
Today I tried to catch a break
I stared the devil in his face, fought, and won
I stood firm on the rock, tired but unyielding
I lifted my eyes and stretched out my hands in surrender
And just when the victory sang in my ears
I got shoved back into the abyss
Today, I’m still trying to catch a break
I’m clinging to my source and maker
I’m hoping, praying and believing
I’m baring my soul and softening my heart
And even when my peace feels short-lived
I’ll hold firm, faith in hands, back away from the abyss

This poem is for anyone who has ever felt like the ground keeps crumbling beneath their feet just when they think they’ve found steady footing. It’s for the ones who rise, fall, and still choose to believe, even when the abyss feels closer than peace. This is a reminder that resilience isn’t loud or perfect; sometimes, it’s just holding on one more day, whispering prayers through cracked voices, and choosing not to let go.
If you’re still trying to catch a break, you’re not alone. Keep going. The light always returns, even if only flickering at first. Even when life keeps knocking you down, keep trying. Keep believing. Don’t let the abyss win.
